A camera's autofocus system intelligently adjusts the camera lens to obtain focus on the subject, and it is the key to obtain a sharp and clear photo for further video analysis. Autofocus is that great time saver and helps improve the quality of the pictures we take.  Moreover, the quality of the picture will dominate the accuracy of the video analysis and detection.

This entire process of autofocus is just completed within a few mini-second.  For difficult subjects, the camera may fail to achieve satisfactory focus and will give up on repeating the focus sequence, resulting in failed autofocus. Whether and why autofocus may fail is primarily determined by several factors. There are many variation between camera models, lenses or focus settings.  The three most important factors influencing autofocus are the light level, subject contrast and camera or subject motion.

There are two kinds of automatically focusing system: active and passive. In active systems some kind of radiation will be sent towards the scene: sonar, laser, structured light, etc. The reflection of the object in the scene is captured and analyzed to determine the objects distance from the camera. In passive systems, nothing is sent towards the scene. Instead, the scene will be captured under its own ambient illumination, and this image is analyzed to determine distance. In some passive systems, the camera may use an autofocus assist light to provide additional illumination during focusing. It is especially useful when the scene is dark. In some other systems, the camera may project a grid or texture onto the scene for a better analysis. It is also particularly useful when focusing on texture-less surfaces.
